I picked this out because it was a Green Drive, and its performing JUST as I am expecting so far.. It is VERY quiet, and it keeps very cool, too. My friend reviewed it and they said it runs quieter and way more COOLER (temperature-wise) than the one he had. So he ordered one with a TB!! I will store all of my photos, software, and music on it so I can take it with my laptop on the go. You'll REALLY like this External Hard Drive. I know something good when I try it!
I bought this because it LOOKED like a good deal (with rebate). Fantom did not include an eSATA cable which saved them all of a quarter. The drive was not preformatted. Even after formatting twice, I still can not read/write to the drive reliably. I get UNKNOWN I/O errors. I have many other USB and eSATA backup drives that work just fine on all my PCs, so it is not the PCs fault. Even deleting the files that did copy onto it does not work all the time. After already buying it I have now found reviews on other sites where more than 50% of the people report never getting a rebate check from Fantom. Hopefully it is just the interface that is junk and I can at least remove the HD and use it in another PC. The HD is a WD with only 8MB cache.

I have not used this product. I bought it as a gift for my daughter. I do have 2 Fantom drives that I have been using for a couple of years. One is a 500 gb and one is an 80 gb, which I have had much longer. These drives have always done just what I wanted them to do. The 80 gb I use for manual backup of my critical files. The 500 gb is used for Time Machine on my Mac.

Very Happy with this external hard drive. Does everything as stated. Nice and quiet when it is running back up. Like the stand that comes with it. Would definatly recommend it to someone to buy.

What can I say? The Fantom 500GB GreenDrive worked perfectly out of the box. It is quiet and fast. I bought it because of a nice rebate, but it is good enough to buy another without the rebate. I compares favorably with other, "big name" large size drives I have purchased in the past.

We found the Fantom Drives 500GB External GreenDrive very simple to hook up and use with our MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and using Apple's Time Machine. The GreenDrive is very quiet, and once the initial back-up was completed, subsequent back-ups take very little time. We do not choose to back-up our MacBook daily, but rather once or more a week, and we expect that very little power is used by the GreenDrive to accomplish this. The Fantom Drive is attractive and its aluminum finish goes well with the MacBook Pro. We would have appreciated a somewhat longer combination of power cord/USB cable, but this is not a major quibble. We do contend, however, that if a price point of $50.00 following rebates is feasible for the 500GB GreenDrive, this price point could just as easily be reached without forcing the consumer to jump through all the hoops and wait many weeks for two separate checks to arrive, a situation aggravated when one of these checks never does arrive.

I have been using older small capacity hard drives in an external enclosure to backup my files but it would whine and was very irritating. Also, I usually could not get all my data on any one drive.
This high capacity drive not only holds all my data but noise is non-existant. Now I do not have to back up the data from my computer as I just save everything to the GreenDrive.
I use my computer a lot and every now and then I like to reprogram it and start fresh. This way I do not have to take time to make sure I have all my data saved; yet I can still back the external up to my other external drives for safe keeping. Thank you Fantom Drives!
