Katie stared down at the two iPhone 5's sitting on the dresser trying to figure out whose was whose. No luck. Both were practically brand new without a single distinguishing scratch, scuff or chew mark. But one was hers, and one was Marco's. And if she picked up the wrong one, everything would be ruined.
They were going through one of their "rough patches," as Katie's mom liked to call it—especially after downing a few daiquiris during their weekly lunch date at El Guapo's. You see, Marco had a little too much of his father in him, and he could be colder than the bottle of Stoli Katie's mom kept tucked away inside her freezer. This time, though, Katie was fed up with Marco's aloof demeanor. She missed the feeling of being adored, so she had given her number to Jules, the Quebecois barista who always made little hearts in the foam of her cappuccinos. He hadn't called or texted Katie yet, but she knew it was only a matter of time.
Of course, Katie wasn't serious about sneaking around behind Marco's back with Jules. She wasn't heartless—not like her mother. No, Katie just wanted some attention. But if she picked up the wrong phone and Jules contacted her, Marco would never understand. He'd leave her, and she'd be alone.
If only Katie had ordered those customizable iPhone 5 cases from Picture it on Canvas. She could have picked from one of the pre-made designs for her phone and a monogrammed case for Marco—plus a personalized case for her mom printed with a picture of that beloved crystal whisky decanter that she loved almost as much as her daughter. They're custom made from impact-resistant plastic yet they leave all the buttons, cameras and ports free for easy use.
Biting down hard on her lip and closing her eyes, Katie reached out, grabbed the first iPhone that she felt, and walked out the door. Her fate was sealed.
